The Open Door Store

Throughout our communities, the COVID-19 pandemic unearthed new challenges and shone a spotlight on existing fault lines in our support networks. As with many organizations, Child Focus had to pivot – and we identified new needs for families, particularly those with infants and children who are involved with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP), Passaic County CASA, and SBCT.

In response, we created the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) to help families with necessities like clothing, school supplies, and diapers, as well as special treats and recognition gifts for birthdays and holidays. Even as we recover and rebuild from the pandemic, this natural program extension offers continued value to children and families – and so we have taken steps to make it a permanent fixture of Child Focus.

As we transitioned to a permanent program, the NAP was rebranded as the Open Door Store (ODS), a unique store-like setting where children and families can access essentials at no cost. But the value of ODS goes beyond basic needs and direct services. It offers children and families a sense of dignity by allowing them agency and individual choice in the items they select – affirming a sense of control that can be transformative, particularly for a child who has experienced trauma. For families who may feel isolated or alone, the ODS also fosters a sense of community and creates a supportive environment to connect with others in a similar position.
